Programme April - June 2025

There are no costs to participate with a walk unless specified in a programme. FC 1 or FC 2 means a fuel charge of 1 or 2 euro to pay to the driver in case of car share.

If you would like to offer a walk for the April - June 2025 programme, please send walk details to:

schepeljoost@gmail.com at least one week before the actual walk and I will add it to this programme. If you have to cancel the walk because of poor weather conditions, please send an email to me latest at 6.00 pm the day before the walk and I will amend the programme. So if you want to join a walk and expect bad weather the next day, check this weblog the evening before after 6.00 pm.         

Tue 1 Apr 10.00 am Level 1-2. Walk leader Sabine Denissen (tel 0032-488189509). Meet Cómpeta tourist office. Natural Park circular walk. Via Cruz del Monte along the lower track of the Natural Park and above the football field via the GR249 up to Loa Gaviarra. Back down via Puerto del Collado to Cruz del Monte. Refreshments afterwards at Plaza Almijara in Cómpeta. Distance 8 kms, ascent/descent 300 m, 3,5 hours.

Wed 9 Apr 09.30 am Level 1. Walk leader Sabine Denissen (tel 0032-488189509). Meet Cómpeta tourist office for the Loymerbus to Algarrobo Pueblo (bus leaves at 9.30 in Canillas; at 9.45 in Cómpeta - walk leader gets on bus in Cómpeta - please bring small money for paying cash). Easy, horizontal walk from Algarrobo Pueblo along the river bed to Algarrobo Costa and further along the seaside boulevard to Torre del Mar. Refreshments and some free time in Torre del Mar. We take the bus back up to Cómpeta in Torre del Mar (Calle Dr. Fleming 47) at 2 pm. Arrival at 2.45 pm in Cómpeta and 2.55 pm in Canillas. Distance 6 kms, 2 hours walk - 4,5 hours with bus trip included.

Sun 13 Apr 10.00 am Level 2. Walk leader Joost Schepel (tel/whatsapp 0034-619511104). Meet Canillas tourist office for car share to walk startpoint. Circular walk from Salares. The first part via the GR249 and Casa de Haro to Puerto de Cruz del Muerto, then via Fogarate and Puerto de los Carboneros to los Eriales and afterwards down towards the river and back to Salares. Distance approx. 12 kms, ascent/descent 400 m, 4,5 hours. Refreshments in local bar afterwards or if closed at Ramon in Canillas.

Sun 27 Apr 09.30 am Level 2. Walk leader Mary-Rose Cross (tel 643053028). Meet Canillas de Albaida tourist office for car share to the start. FC 3. El Peñon Grande walk above Canillas de Aceituno. Distance 14 kms, ascent 945 m, 5 hours. Refreshments in Canillas de Aceituno afterwards.

Thu 8 May 10.00 am Level 1. Walk leader Sabine Denissen (tel 0032-488189509). Meet Cómpeta tourist office. Historic azulejos walk. An easy walk discovering the different azulejos tableaus in the village with the history of the region along our route. They are all located at the most remarkable and attractive locations in the village. A nice way to discover Cómpeta. Refreshments at Hotel Balcón de Cómpeta. Distance 4 kms, 1,5 hours walk.

Tue 13 May 10.00 am Level 2. Walk leader Sabine Denissen (tel 0032-488189509). Meet Cómpeta tourist office for car share to Sedella. FC 2. This Sedella walk was part of the walking festival 2024. A beautiful walk with a lot of nature and astonishing views. Bring your lunch with you for a nice break near the river. Lomg trousers advisable due to shrubs sometimes. Distance 9 kms, ascent/descent 450 m, 3,5 hours walk.

Wed 21 May 10.00 am Level 1. Walk leader Joost Schepel (tel/whatsapp 0034-619511104). Meet Cómpeta tourist office. Walk along hidden alleys to the west side of the village, then onwards to the top of Canillas. From there halfway along the irrigation channel and up through an olive grove. We return via los Caballos des Mosquin back to Cómpeta. Refreshments afterwards at my house Casa Óptima. Distance 7 kms, ascent 200 m, 2,5 hours walk.

Tue 27 May 10.00 am Level 2. Walk leader Sabine Denissen (tel 0032-488189509). Meet Cómpeta tourist office. The three villages walk is one of regular very much appreciated walks. We follow the GR 249 to Canillas de Albaida  and pass the Ermita Santa Ana. We go down through lovely village alleys to the old Roman bridge to join the local Sendero los Molinos. We take a break near the river in Archez and walk back up the steep path to bodega Jarel and Cómpeta. Distance 8 kms, ascent/descent 300 m, 2,5 hours walk.

Wed 4 June 08.00 am Level 2+/3. Walk leader Mary-Rose Cross (tel 643053028). Meet Canillas de Albaida tourist office to the start. FC 2. Starting and finishing above Salares at 800 m. Beatiful walk to the summit of Malas Camas 1793 m. 19 kms, 5+ hours.

Tue 10 June 10.00 am Level 1+. Walk leader Alasdair Campbell (tel +44 7914672111). Meet Cómpeta tourist office for car share to start point. FC 2.  This walk is fully booked. Walk followed by lunch at the ghost village of Acebuchal. We'll go on a short stroll, looking for ruined churches and superior views, before tucking down into a lovely lunch at the Acebuchal restaurant. Distance 9 kms, ascent 470 m. There are sections of deep undergrowth, so trousers are recommended. We'll need a few cars, which are able to cross a shallow stream on the way there. Please message the organiser 1 week beforehand to book a place for lunch.

Wed 18 June 09.00 am. All levels. Walk leader Mary-Rose Cross (tel 643053028). Meer Cómpeta tourist office for car share to the start. FC 1. Walk/wade part way up the Rio Patalamara (in the water for 1/1,5 hours) and return overland. Water sandals/trainers/pole x 1 advisable. Waterproof contents of rucksack (just in case!!). Chane of footwear from water to land personal choice. 3 hours.

Dates Mount Toubkal trek: Wed 17 Sept - Mon 22 September 2025 Level 3.  This trek is now full, but there is a small reserve list. Organiser Alasdair Campbell (alasdaircampbell13@gmail.com). For those looking for a different trekking experience, we propose to run a trek in 2025 to Mount Toubkal in Morocco. This peak is over 4100 metres high and is the highest in North Afrika. The trek is over 2,5 days and is 25 kms in distance. The ascent on day 1 and 2 is approx. 1200 m each day. Nights on the trek would be in lodges with full board included. Estimated costs per person are trek (€150), 3 nights hotel in Marrakesh (€120), return flight Málaga to Marrakesh (€120), participation cost (€30). Those interested to be on the reserve list should email the organiser.

The Cómpeta walking festival will be held 25 - 28 September 2025 and is now fully booked. In case of cancellations inscription will reopen on 15 August. Please consult on that day the website www.spanjeanders.nl/walkingfestival
